JOB SUMMARY: The Simulation Specialist (SIM Spec) provides education related to all aspects of simulation education and assessment of the performance of health professions students, physicians, nurses, and other staff during simulation activities at EMMC. SIM Spec collaborates with system hospitals and affiliated academic institutions. They assist with the development of policies and procedures related to the simulation-based education of health professions students and professionals. Assists with the recruitment of faculty, providing orientation to the learning objectives of the simulation exercise the new faculty member is teaching, providing education on methods of assessing participant performance in the metrics required, and assuring assessments are completed in a timely fashion. Participates on house wide workgroups and committees to provide simulation educational expertise and input. Coordinates simulation-related initiatives. Involved in needs assessments, simulation construction, presentation, and debriefing using best practice standards as defined by the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL).
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED: Bachelor's of Science Degree required
MINIMUM EDUCATION PREFERRED: Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing preferred.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED Minimum three years healthcare experience. CHSE certification or willing to work to, and acquire this certification within 3 years of employment. Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication skills, teamwork, and organizational skills. Demonstrates collaborative, problem solving skills.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year utilizing simulation in education including constructing, presenting and debriefing simulation-based exercises. Current ACLS, Current PALS or willing to work to acquire these certifications within 2 years .
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Capacity to concentrate in a busy and sometimes stressful environment. Ability to come in close contact with people. Sitting, and extended periods of standing and walking are required. Stretchers, monitors, pumps may need to be moved several times a day to accommodate equipment transfers required for simulation exercises. The SIM Spec must be able to lift 10 lbs. with one hand. Reaching and stretching may be required at any time. Ability to push and pull heavy computers on wheels, push wheelchairs with patients, and lifting 50 pounds without assistance. Stooping, bending, lifting, pulling and twisting may be required. The SIM Spec must be able to stretch, reach, and retrieve equipment from the supply carts of bend to reach equipment supplied below knee level. Must possess upper body strength, agility and lung capacity necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Portable O2 tanks may need to be lifted from O2 racks. Use of the simulation equipment requires visual acuity for reading information on computer screens and fine motor skills for keyboarding and use of a mouse.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Fast paced clinical environment. Participation in unit specific and hospital wide activities that promote self and staff development. Participation in the development of unit specific strategic goals that assist with the fulfillment of the Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center mission and vision. In addition to unit specific addendum must possess upper body strength, agility, and lung capacity necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
