Payroll Specialist

FUNCTION: Working under the direction of the Bangor Payroll management team, the Payroll Specialist performs a variety of tasks associated with entering and processing payrolls for service bureau customers and is passionate about providing a differentiated customer experience. The Payroll Specialist assists in ensuring that Bangor Payroll and its customers are in compliance with local, state and federal regulations, coordinates product offerings for other payroll related services and interacts with third party service professionals when needed on behalf of our payroll customers.


  • Responsible for accurate and timely production of client payrolls and related reports
  • Enters and processes payrolls while under strict time constraints.
  • Supports and maintains an assigned client base of approximately 150 payroll clients
    • Payroll Specialist I: supports clients with basic payroll needs and employee portal who value local support and personalized service
    • Payroll Specialist II: supports clients with an increased service demand including the utilization of a few additional services (remote entry, Workers Compensation tracking, comp-as-you-go, and HR support center)
    • Payroll Specialist III: supports clients with an increased service demand including the utilization of a few additional services (general ledger, time-off, HR module, and Bangor Time)
  • Provides exemplary service support and resolves issues and concerns in a timely fashion
  • Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with clients and internal customers
  • Communicates directly and professionally with internal/ external clients and their trusted advisors
  • Explains product features/benefits, understands each client’s business operations/needs and responds appropriately
  • Ensures that clients are receiving maximum value from our products and services
  • Enters payroll and makes changes to company and employee payroll data as requested
  • Imports/exports data files into/out of payroll software
  • Generates and troubleshoots macro-enabled Excel spreadsheets for customers
  • Submits pension files; sets up and maintains Employee Self-Serve/Virtual Mailroom
  • Proactively applies critical thinking and problem-solving skills to research and troubleshoot in order to provide effective solutions to meet the needs of our customers
  • Independently researches customer questions and explores technologies in order to provide solutions
  • Assists in ensuring that the Bank and Clients are in compliance with local, state and federal regulations
  • Assists Payroll Distribution department when needed
  • Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned

  • Maintains strict confidentiality


  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • College, business, or professional training preferred
  • Attainment of FPC (Fundamental Payroll Certification) highly encouraged
  • Excellent customer service skills required
  • High level of proficiency with Excel, emphasis on ability to create formulas for data manipulation
  • Attention to detail, emphasis on accuracy
  • Strong multitasking skills including the ability to remain highly accurate with the data while completing multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work with little supervision
  • Payroll experience helpful
  • Strong math skills required
  • Microsoft Word and Outlook proficiency
  • Good communications skills, verbal and written required
