The Associate Dean of Academic Operations in the College of Graduate and Professional Studies is responsible to the Dean and provides creative leadership in the promotion of excellence in undergraduate and graduate online programs. The role encompasses oversight of and accountability for academic operations within the College, including the following departments: Academic Programs, Instructional Design, Enrollment, Student Support, Tactical Marketing, Assessment, Policy and Accreditation. The Associate Dean of Academic Operations directs academic programs and associated operational units with respect to the nature and structure of online educational programs and is ultimately accountable for the quality and currency of academic curricula. The position also provides impetus, direction and support to academic programs as they implement educational programs that meet the needs of a changing society and student body. The Associate Dean collaborates with the CGPS Chief Business Officer to ensure that fiscal and strategic goals, set by CGPS Finance and Strategy, are achieved. The Associate Dean of Academic Operations assumes responsibilities of the Dean as delegated and serves as the CEO in the absence of the Dean. This is a full-time, twelve-month senior administrator position within the College.

Responsibilities

Academic Integrity and Strategy:

  • Ensures overall integrity/quality in the delivery of academic programming within the College of Graduate and Professional Studies.
  • Ensures that curricular assessment data is used to recommend quality enhancements to teaching styles and curricular content.
  • Identifies factors in the curriculum and student experience that warrant further evaluation and/or assessment using benchmark data.
  • Establishes procedures and programs that demonstrate a commitment to an inclusive environment.
  • Ensures appropriate accreditation and approval standards are met and communicates with all accreditation agencies.
  • Monitors national, regional and local trends in online education to assure competitiveness in all education programs offered at the College.
  • Coordinates compliance in teaching assignments of faculty across all academic programs in conjunction with department heads.
  • Recognizes the critical role of scholarship in both knowledge dissemination and generation in shaping academic programs.
    Operations
  • Provides leadership and oversight to Academic Operations units, promoting cross-functional collaboration and partnership to achieve common goals
  • Monitors and analyzes operational metrics related to marketing, enrollment, retention in relation to the College’s strategic goals
  • Establishes and adheres to operational best practices to ensure both academic quality and operational efficiency
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with mission-critical institutional stakeholders to foster a seamless and student-driven academic experience

Leadership:

  • Provides guidance and oversight for faculty development in academic programming.
  • Guides direct reports in developing training and professional development activities and creates a climate supportive of the development of training to support educational innovation.
  • Participates in planning strategic initiatives to achieve the College’s mission, values, and vision in collaboration with the strategic planning units within the College.
  • Facilitates shared governance among academic program managers to assure ongoing improvement/maintenance of high quality programs.
  • Serves as liaison between the College and offices of the University on issues of academic policy and programming.
  • Represents the College to the broader community, including state, regional, national, international professional meetings, and legislative activities related to online education.
  • Serves as a coach, mentor and advocate for all staff.

Budget:

  • Effectively guides the utilization of resources and budgets that support the academic programming of the College.
  • Provides budgetary input into forecasting and planning activities for new and existing programs.

Collaboration

  • Partners with the Strategy and Finance unit to ensure strategic goals are achieved across the College.
  • Works with the Dean in building relationships and reputation with external constituencies.
  • Creates a positive environment that supports innovation, teamwork and successful outcomes
  • Manages conflict and change in ways that contribute to the long-term success of the College of Graduate and Professional Studies
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Dean.

Qualifications

Terminal doctoral degree required, plus 5 years progressive leadership experience in academic operations and undergraduate/graduate teaching or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Plus:

  • Two or more years of management/supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated experience to motivate staff and lead teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated experience to manage complex interaction of academic programming needs and fiscal resources.
  • Record of functioning as an effective collaborator.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong ability to prioritize
  • Strong computer skills (MS Office)
  • Must be willing and able to work on-site at the UNE Portland campus. (This position is not remote.)
