The Center for Systems Neurogenetics of Addiction (CSNA) aims to identify the biological relationships between the stages and patterns of cocaine addiction and behaviors that predict drug abuse. To uncover these relationships, we make use of advanced mouse genetic tools—specifically the Collaborative Cross and Diversity Outbred mouse populations and associated computational methods—that enable holistic study of genes, biological molecules and behaviors.

We are working as a complementary team of investigators from several laboratories and institutions, each bringing deep experience and knowledge in the genetic studies of specific aspects of addiction in the laboratory mouse.

This Research Intern position is a 1 year temporary position designed specifically for individuals with a 4 year Life Science, Biology, Computational Biology or applicable degree looking to advance their scientific/research training prior to pursuing further educational endeavors.

The Research Intern works under the direct supervision of a PI or Research Scientist in planning, developing, conducting and evaluating scientific research in a laboratory, clinic, field and/or teaching environment. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Project planning, experimental design, developing methodology, conducting procedures, modifying procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, project management.
  • Developing and delivering presentations at lab meetings, and if appropriate, preparing publications and reports.
  • Incumbent will be responsible for performing routine phenotyping procedures as defined by the research program and will be expected to work well in a team environment. 
  • Key responsibilities will include carrying out predetermined behavioral and physiological phenotyping assays on laboratory mice, mouse husbandry, collecting experimental data, keeping detailed accurate records, reporting collected-data in a clear and organized manner.
Required Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, biological sciences, computational sciences or related discipline.
  • Explicit interest in pursuing and completing eligibility requirements for continuing studies in biomedical and/or clinical research; or in pursuing a medical profession.
  • Prior mouse handling and colony management experience is highly desirable.
  • The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism.
  • Previous experience in an academic setting interpreting and evaluating results, and compiling data preferred.
