POSITION SUMMARY:
The Optometrist will provide quality eye care and emergency treatment to Katahdin Valley Health Center patients. The primary focus will be to examine eyes and visual system, diagnose problems or impairments, prescribe corrective lenses, and provide treatment. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions. The optometrist will collaborate with KVHC providers while acting as a contributing member to the Integrated Primary Care Team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- 1. Perform vision tests, analyze results and develop a treatment plan.
- 2. Examine eyes using observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents, to determine visual acuity and perception, focus and coordination and to diagnose diseases and other abnormalities such as glaucoma or color blindness.
- 3. Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and medications.
- 4. Prescribe therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision.
- 5. Provide pre and postoperative care to patients undergoing eye surgery, for example, examining a patient’s eyes the day after surgery.
- 6. Evaluate patients for the presence of diseases such as diabetes and refer patients to other healthcare providers as needed.
- 7. Consult with and refer patients to ophthalmologist or other health care practitioner if additional medical treatment is determined necessary.
- 8. Promote eye health by counseling patients, including explaining how to clean and wear contact lenses.
- 9. Work closed with primary care providers in the provision of team delivery of healthcare.
- 10. Maintain accurate, timely and quality health records.
- 11. Participate in all quality measures as required.
- 12. Oversees clinical training, education and consultation to KVHC staff to maximize staff potential.
- 13. Performs additional duties or projects as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer.
- 14. Adheres to all KVHC policies and protocols.
- 15. Complies with all safety rules and protocols. Reports all incidents, regardless of severity, immediately to their supervisor and completes an incident report and investigation form, which will be forwarded to Human Resources within 24 hours of the incident.
- 16. Conducts themselves as a good steward in the communities served by KVHC; represents the organization at outreach activities as needed.
- 17. Actively participates as committee member as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- State of Maine license or the ability to become licensed in the State of Maine.
- Board Certification by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.
- Graduation from an approved school of optometry.
- Experience in rural, community oriented care.
- Commitment to providing quality health care services with compassion and dignity.
- Must possess a clean criminal and DHHS background.
- Must possess the ability and means to travel between clinics as needed.
- Valid State of Maine Driver’s license and ability to be insured by KVHC’s vehicle insurance carrier.
